An older Catana 471 underway (note the soft bimini) with the port dagger board in the “up” position. It can be lowered by releasing a line in the cockpit and letting it fall of its own weight. To raise it, a winch is used to bend on a line which attaches to the board via a block below the deck at the base of the board. Note the uncluttered deck. The jack line necessarily runs above the deck but most other lines run below. In addition, ventilation is from large portholes in the sides, including two that scoop the air in, eliminate “hatch clutter” on deck. The combination of white foam-core deck with no hatches and the special 90% sun retarding window curtains seen here, keep the boat cool and the deck uncluttered. (Air conditioning is planned for after the boat arrives in the Caribbean. A genset may be added too.) This boat has a soft bimini but Escape Cay will have 8 solar collectors mounted atop a hard bimini.
